Any time I put something on CL, except in the "free" section, every enquiry I get on the item starts with "what's the least you'd take for it?"
Even if it's already an amazing deal. I think I'll start quoting HIGHER prices. That should be fun.
"What's the least you'd take?"
"325"
"But the ad says 275"
"OK, then 350"
"Wait, what?"
"375, final offer"

I always offer sellers on CL $5 less. So far no one has even hesitated to take it.

Yup. I even had an ad with $80 firm in the price. First email: would you take $50. No you innumerate, I won't.

As a rule I only negotiate in person. That's a great way to weed out the time wasters.

I'd recommend for your own sanity, sending back an amount that is higher than what you are asking for.

I usually put something in at the bottom like
*Price not artificially inflated to create bargaining room, unreasonable offers will be ignored.

I do that, it gets hilarious. I put up a tablet once. One of those HP touchpads I converted to run android. I paid 200 for it but got bored of it and sold it about 4 months later when these things were on ebay and CL for 200$ still. I listed it for 150 including the accessories and box and everything. Favorite email on it
Guy - I have 50$ cash I can give you for it. Will you take it?
Me - Yes, if you also have another 100$ in cash.
Guy - Well that thing's only worth 60$ at best
Me - Keep telling yourself that until you get 150$
There were a few others like it but eventually people with brain cells responded and a guy paid 150 for it, once I showed him it worked and functioned and everything.

Someone was selling guppies for 50 cents each and it was already a really good deal, but my dad said to offer to pay $20 for 50 guppies and the seller was insulted. I apologized to him and said that $25 would be fine.
Best experience I ever had, he owned the entire apartment complex and we spent a good hour talking about how to raise guppies, showed us his set up and his koi pond and we exchanged numbers cause he said he changes to breed another type of fish every so often and he'll call next time he has stock of fish.
Best CL experience I ever had, I'm never lowballing someone ever again.

Probably because they all know that whatever they list for, even if it's a totally fair price, they're going to have trouble getting exactly that price.

I've never sold anything for less than I've listed. In fact the last thing I sold I got $5 more for it, because they didn't have change and I didn't have change.

Well, I see this as a negotiation tactic. Not everyone will know to ask that the other party make a counter offer first, so this question just lowers the price before the real negotiation begins.
It's not nice, but it works.

Eh. I think if you don't say firm, then you're open to negotiations. However, if you're selling an item for $200 and someone offers you $75, then you can start the trolling. Last night I bought a brand new Crane Fireball ignition for Grimace. Guy had it up for $200 but was roughly 1.5 hours away including a ferry trip. Taking that into consideration, I offered him $150, as he had it up for $200. He countered with $175 and the fact that he would be downtown (only an hour away) last night. Deal, met him at 7pm and collected my new ignition.

I guess it's possible. It might depend on what kind of stuff you're selling, and thus, the target buyer. Maybe some buyers are always cheapskates.

It's apparently a dad's job to try to blow good deals for their kids by low-balling. I see it every day. It's like some sort of odd instinct that fathers possess where they need to teach their offspring that it doesn't matter how good the deal is, only how much less they'll take for it.
